Q: Why is life so hard? Doesn’t God want good for me?

Some people believe that life is as hard as one wants to make it! Often you will hear Christians say, quoting from 1 Corinthians 10:13, “I didn’t think God was going to lay on me more than I was able to bear.” And yet a closer look and examination of the life of the complainant would reveal God hadn’t laid on half as much as they had taken on them-selves. The Bible (The Good Book) says, “We reap what we sow.” (a paraphrase of Galatians 6:7). If our life is hard it may not be God’s doing at all.

However, Christians face hardships; some for our own spiritual growth as allowed by God for the trying of our faith (James 1:2-4); others because of our own extravagance and/or disobedience (Galatians 6:7); and still others come our way naturally (Galatians 3:1-5).

As Christians living out our lives in this sinful and wayward world, we are not exempt from the hardships, the suffering, the sorrows, and, I might add, the temptations of this present evil world; all of which are the very byproduct of a fallen spiritual world eating from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.

John 16:33
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

Few Christians today suffer from the type of tribulation that the Lord is speaking of in John 16:33. This tribulation comes from spreading the Gospel. It is a tribulation that has been as soft as a word of rejection by a friend or as harsh as the laying down of one’s life for the cause of Christ. If our life be hard – let it be a hard life dedicated in service to Christ. And let us lean heavily upon the leading of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. God promises in Isaiah 26:3,

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee…

Even in the midst of hardship we can enjoy the perfect peace of God.

Romans 8:18
For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

Doesn’t God want good for me?

God, in Christ Jesus, went to an old rugged cross, was nailed to that cross and died a painful agonizing death there, in order to one day lift you out of this hateful, Christ-rejecting world and bring you in to a joyous, peaceful and happy new eternal world to come.

There’s a new world coming! Praise the LORD! And that, my friend, will be good for all who put their trust in the Lord Jesus Christ (John 3:16; Romans 10:9).
