Q: Why should I go to church? I can pray at home!
Hebrews 10:23-25
23: Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) 24: And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: 25: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
These verses of Scripture speak directly to the one who claims to be a Christian but is apathetic about church attendance, “Why should I go to church? I can have church at home.” Yes, this is true, but you can’t have fellowship, be an encouragement to others, or be encouraged while sitting at home in isolation. This attitude is destructive to the church and misleading to the lost! If you are a Christian, you have a profession of faith and that profession is needed by so many, not merely in the church, but in the world as well.
The writer of Hebrews writes,
…let us consider [be mindful of] one another to provoke [inspire] unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is…
There were people in the New Testament Church days who paraded their liberty in Christ by refusing any longer to gather together in formal worship. Their attitude was “We don’t need this!” And the Scripture says this attitude is wrong!
As Christians living out our lives in this sinful and wayward world, we are not exempt from the hardships, the suffering, and sorrows that plague the world scene. We need to be encouraged and strengthened daily in the promises of God. What better place to find spiritual strength and encouragement in your Christian walk than among brothers and sisters in Christ at a local church?
What kind of a profession of faith do you have? How confident are you in sharing your faith with others? How confident are you in giving answers for your faith? Our faith in Christ Jesus is challenged every day by the weakness of the flesh and by the wiles of the devil. The Bible teaches us that Satan, as a roaring lion, walks about seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8). But God’s Word strengthens us and encourages us to fellowship with other Christians; for where two are three are gathered in His name there He is in the midst of them (Matthew 18:20).
Hebrews Chapter 10, verses 23-25, speak very clearly to the question, “Why should I go to church?” We need to be encouraged in our daily walk with Christ and reassured of the promise of His soon coming. The only way we can be encouraged in the LORD is by associating routinely with the Lord’s people, and be actively involved in learning more about His Word.
Dr. Billy Graham always closes his service by looking straight into the camera and saying, “Be sure to go to church on Sunday!” This is Godly advice for all that would claim the name – Christian!
