Services

Powhatan typically holds church services on Sundays and Wednesdays.

Sunday School

Starting at 9:45 am on Sunday mornings, we meet in various Sunday School classes to learn about the Bible and the foundations of our faith. These small-group settings give us a solid grounding in both the theory and application of living a Christian life, teaching us to develop a closer relationship with God and our fellow man. For details about our classes, see our Sunday School page.

Worship Service

On Sunday mornings, after Sunday School, we meet in the sanctuary from 11 am to noon for our Worship Service. Our service is mostly traditional, with hymns from the choir and congregation, prayer requests, and special music leading up to a Spirit-led, Bible-based sermon. On occasion, we incorporate some praise-and-worship singing into the service. You can listen to recorded sermons on our Sermons page.

Bible Study

Our 6 pm Sunday-evening service is more relaxed and interactive. We meet in the Fellowship Hall and enjoy coffee while our pastor leads us in our Bible study. Questions and comments are welcomed, as we all seek to learn together.

Prayer Meeting

On Wednesday nights at 7 pm, we hold our Prayer Meeting in the Fellowship Hall. The informal setting allows us to study and practice what God’s Word tells us about prayer.

Family Night

On the first Wednesday after the first Sunday in each month, our Prayer Meeting is replaced with a Family Night service. We have service/study groups for each family member to attend. The Laymen’s League meets in the Original Fellowship Hall, the Woman’s Auxiliary meets in the new Fellowship Hall, and the Youth meet in the 6-to-12 classroom.

On the first family night of each new quarter (January, April, July, and October), we share a covered-dish dinner at 6 pm. Bring something to share, or just come and take part in the fellowship. Family Night services follow at 7 pm.

Vacation Bible School

Vacation Bible School (VBS) is a short summer program ministering to local children and adults. The program features a central theme, and teaches the Gospel message and Bible lessons through stories based on this theme.

For 2023, VBS was held from June 25th through 28th. Our theme was Stellar by Group. Wanda Benson was our director, and Kristin Radford and Sarah Chestnut were her assistants.

Sunday School

Join our Sunday School program for Christian growth and fellowship. This is where we develop friendships, learn what it means to be a Christian, and discuss how to apply scriptural truth to our daily lives. Weekly small-group scripture study provides a framework for learning Biblical doctrine and history. Our class sizes and informal atmosphere encourage participation in discussions.

The ages listed for each class are guidelines; members are encouraged to attend where they feel comfortable. Come grow with us!

Salvation

God’s Plan of Salvation

If you have never come to the place in your life where you have asked Christ to come into your heart and be Lord of your life, and where you know without reservation that Heaven would be your home if you died, you need to accept Christ’s free gift of salvation. It’s easy to do:

Know that God Loves You

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

“But God commendeth His love towards us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

Admit That You Are A Sinner

“For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23

“As it is written, there is none righteous, no, not one.” Romans 3:10

Realize God Has The Only Remedy for Sin

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal like through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23

“But as many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the Sons of God, even to them that believe on His name.” John 1:12

Believe You Can Be Saved Right Now!

“Behold I stand at the door and knock; if any many hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him…” Romans 3:20

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:13

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Romans 10:9-10

Get Involved in a Church

“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be glory now and forever. Amen.” 2 Peter 3:18

When you make a decision to receive Christ, you need the fellowship of fellow Christians who will help you in your growth as a new Christian. You are invited to attend and always welcome at Powhatan Original Free Will Baptist Church.

Know That You Have Been Forgiven and Saved

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, he that heareth My word, and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” John 5:24

“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” 1 John 5:13

If you have just accepted Christ as your personal Savior, please contact us, under no obligation, so we can pray for you and help you begin your life as a born-again Christian.

Beliefs

Vision

The Original Free Will Baptist denomination is rich in its history, and maintains a strong vision to (1) bring spiritual maturity to our people though Biblical preaching and teaching, (2) increase growth by winning the lost to Christ, and (3) increase the number of people involved in ministry through spiritual education and opportunity.

Goals

The mission of the people of God called Original Free Will Baptists is to glorify God. Therefore, we strive to know Christ, build His Church, and make Him known to all people as we continue to seek His will. We believe this mission can be fulfilled through:

WORSHIPPING
John 4:23
“…worship the Father in spirit and in truth…”

We commit ourselves to glorifying God by Worship, which is in the adoration of God. Worship is duly required of all His children through praise, prayer, the reading and preaching of His Word, and should inspire witness leading to discipleship. Every Christian may worship God privately; however, this should never replace the corporate worship of the church.

GROWING
2 Peter 3:18
“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ”

We commit ourselves to glorifying God by moving toward maturity through learning, fellowshipping, and doing the work of ministry.

CARING
Galatians 6:10
“As we have opportunity, let us do good unto all men,
especially unto them who are of the household of faith.”

We commit ourselves to glorifying God by making Christ known to the world, by caring for those of the flock of God, and by demonstrating the love of God to all peoples.

SHARING
Matthew 10:7-10
“…freely ye have received, freely give.”

We commit ourselves to glorifying God by sharing what we know, what we have, and what we are with all peoples.

EQUIPPING
Ephesians 4:12a
“For the perfecting (equipping) of the saints for the work of ministry…”

We commit ourselves to glorifying God by equipping all believers for the work of ministry. The church, through its leadership, is to see that the people of God are educated, guided, and cared for that they might become spiritually mature as they do the work of ministry.

(This Mission Statement was officially adopted by the Convention’s Executive Committee on April 11, 1995.)
